Illegal immigration, and immigration in general, has been getting a lot of lip service lately. Actually, it has been an issue that has been toyed with quite a bit over that last 10-15 years. The immigration issue has been a political football, which has been passed around and kicked back and forth between teams that don’t seem particularly interested in scoring a touchdown.
Back in 2006, when the Secure Fence Act was being considered in the Senate, Democrat party leaders envisioned a difficult presidential election in 2008. They wanted to secure their “right flank” against charges of being weak on illegal immigration.
Freshman U.S. Senator Barack Obama supported construction of a physical barrier along the southwest border. “The bill before us will certainly do some good,” he said, before speaking approvingly of a barrier’s ability to “help stem the tide of illegal immigration in this country.”
Supporting construction of a physical barrier seemed the thing to do. So 26 Democrat senators, including Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Chuck Schumer, voted for it. Let’s be clear, however. These Democrats did not actually want an effective physical barrier built. They only wanted to appear as if they did. These were all only words and votes offered up in a politically inspired “show.” The bill passed, and fencing was erected, which offered little or no deterrent to those wanting to go through, over, around, or under the fencing.
In a 2009 speech, Senator Chuck Schumer laid-out his views against illegal immigration that sounded quite similar to what President Trump has said since 2015. “Illegal immigration is wrong, and a primary goal of comprehensive immigration reform must be to dramatically curtail future illegal immigration. “When we use phrases like ‘undocumented workers,’ we convey a message to the American people that their government is not serious about combating illegal immigration, which the American people overwhelmingly oppose,” Schumer said. “If you don’t think it’s illegal, you’re not going to say it. I think it is illegal and wrong and we have to change it. People who enter the United States without our permission are illegal aliens, and illegal aliens should not be treated the same as people who entered the U.S. legally.”
These words, of course, were all thrown out there with a wink and a nod to the Latino voters who were being promised at the same time that some kind of amnesty and/or a pathway to citizenship for those illegal immigrants already in the country would be delivered.
Remember, the democrats had control of The White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives 2008-2009. They could have passed any immigration legislation that they wanted to, but they didn’t. They chose to continue to offer up words and promises instead of solutions and actions.
Wow, you’re sure singing a different tune today, Chuck. But I keep forgetting that what you say really has nothing to do with what you may or may not want to do. Your words are solely political in nature and they change direction as often as the direction of the wind changes.
According to Jenny Beth Martin, who contributes to Fox News, “Today, leading Democrats, including potential candidates for the party’s 2020 presidential nomination (I’m not sure who she’s referring to here actually.), have done a 180-degree reversal. They now oppose construction of a (real) physical barrier, and even demand the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the law enforcement agency responsible for enforcing the laws on the books and removing illegal immigrants.”
So, what has happened to the Democrat party since 2009? They have taken a HARD left. The democrat party is now the socialism party, the anti-law enforcement party and the party that puts the welfare of illegal immigrants over the welfare of American citizens party.
“The hard left hates Donald Trump. The hard left doesn’t want anything to do with Donald Trump. The hard left would turn down anything and everything…, if they believed it came from Trump. If Trump touches it, they reason, it must be [labeled as] bad.”
“Here’s the terrible secret about the Democrats’ switch, in going all-in for legalizing illegal immigrants and eliminating the federal law enforcement authority responsible for removing those who have violated our laws: they have betrayed their own lower-income and working class constituents.”
“Do lower-income U.S. citizens benefit when the terrible schools they’re forced to send their children to see class sizes swell with non-English speaking students? Do working class U.S. citizens benefit when their jobs are taken by illegal immigrants willing to work off the books at far lower costs to their employers? Are any of them benefited when social services must be rationed to accommodate the new illegal immigrant recipients?”
I believe the answers to these questions would be no, no, and no.
In the end, for the democrats, it’s not about doing what’s best for the country, Americans, or any other group of people for that matter. It’s all about staying in power and gaining power, while they deceive and fool people into thinking that their words actually matter.
